Local SEO
Local SEO for Australian service businesses that actually fills the diary.
Ranking in Sydney is not the same problem as ranking in Bendigo or Cairns, and most local SEO advice ignores how thin the competition and how specific the suburb-level searches actually are outside the capitals.

Your Google Business Profile does more work than your website in this category
For plumbers, electricians and other trades, the map pack is where the job gets won or lost, often before a searcher ever clicks through to a site. Categories, service areas and photos on the profile need as much attention as any page on the website itself.
Keep the profile active with real job photos and regular posts. A profile that has not been touched in six months signals to both Google and searchers that the business might not be reliably operating.
Suburb-level pages beat one generic service area page
A single page claiming to serve all of Melbourne will rarely rank for 'emergency electrician Brunswick' against a competitor with a dedicated, genuinely useful page for that suburb. Build separate pages for the suburbs that generate real job volume, each with specific detail rather than the same paragraph with the suburb name swapped in.
Thin, templated suburb pages that only change one word are a known spam pattern and can suppress rankings rather than help them. Each page needs its own photos, service specifics and local references to hold up.
Reviews are the deciding factor between two similarly ranked businesses
Australian consumers check reviews heavily before calling a tradesperson, and volume matters less than recency. A business with fifteen reviews from the last three months will often beat a competitor with two hundred reviews that stopped coming in two years ago.
Build review collection into the actual job completion process, asking on the spot or via a same-day text, rather than relying on customers to remember later.
Regional and rural markets reward different tactics than the capitals
In a smaller regional town, there may only be two or three real competitors, which means basic fundamentals done properly can outrank businesses with much bigger marketing budgets. Do not apply Sydney-level competitive tactics to a market that simply does not have that level of competition.
Citations and local structured data still matter for trust
Consistent name, address and phone details across directories, plus proper LocalBusiness structured data on the site, remain a baseline trust signal for both search engines and cautious customers checking a business is legitimate before they let someone into their home.
