Why review velocity matters more than most businesses realise.
A four-point-nine rating with three reviews from two years ago tells a search engine nothing useful. A steady stream of recent reviews tells it the business is alive and trusted right now.

Recency signals activity that a static rating cannot
A local pack ranking algorithm weighs signals beyond the raw star average, and recency of reviews is one of the clearest indicators that a business is currently operating well, not just operating well two years ago when most of the reviews came in. A steady trickle of new reviews every month outperforms a big historical pile that has gone quiet.
This matters even more in categories where trust decays quickly, like healthcare or home services, where a searcher wants proof the business is good this month, not in some unspecified past.
Ask at the moment of highest satisfaction, not after
The single biggest lever for review velocity is timing the ask to the point right after a customer has expressed satisfaction, whether that is verbally to staff or in a follow-up message immediately after delivery. Waiting a week to send a generic review request drops response rates sharply because the emotional peak has passed.
Build the ask into the operational workflow rather than treating it as a separate marketing task. A text message sent automatically an hour after a service is marked complete, timed while the experience is still fresh, consistently outperforms a monthly email blast asking every past client at once.
Respond to every review, not just the bad ones
Businesses that only respond to negative reviews signal that positive feedback does not warrant a reply, which discourages future reviewers from bothering. Responding to positive reviews with something specific, not a copy-pasted thank you, also gives search engines more unique text tied to the listing.
Never buy or incentivise reviews directly
Offering a discount in exchange for a review violates most platform policies and creates a review base that skews artificially positive in ways that become obvious to both algorithms and readers. The better approach is removing friction from the honest ask, not paying for the outcome.
