Global Web

Choosing an international web design agency without getting burned.

Most agencies that call themselves international have only ever shipped one language, one currency and one timezone. Here is how to tell the difference before you sign a contract.

Ask to see the plumbing, not the portfolio

Screenshots tell you nothing about how a site handles hreflang, currency switching or a client's CRM integration across three regions. Ask for a live multilingual site the agency built, then open the page source and check whether canonicals and hreflang tags are even present.

A portfolio full of single-language brochure sites is a warning sign if you need a business that operates in five countries. The skills required to run a trilingual site with regional pricing are different from the skills required to make a nice-looking single page.

Time zones and handover are operational questions, not soft skills

If your team is in São Paulo and the agency is in a single city with a nine-to-five, you will spend months waiting for replies. Ask directly how they staff across time zones and who you talk to when something breaks on a Sunday in your busiest market.

Get clarity on what happens after launch. Some agencies hand you a site and disappear until the next invoice cycle. Others build the client's internal team's ability to make small edits without opening a ticket for every typo.

Pricing structure reveals how they think

An agency that only quotes in one currency and assumes a US client is not thinking internationally, regardless of what their website says. Ask how they price projects for clients in different regions and whether that pricing reflects genuine cost differences or just a flat markup.

Also ask what is out of scope. International projects fail more often on hidden scope, like translation quality assurance or region-specific compliance, than on design taste.

Reference calls should include a launch that had a problem

Every agency has a client who will say nice things. Ask for a reference where something went sideways during a multi-region rollout and how the agency handled it. The answer tells you more than the case study.
