Global Web

Digital growth in Africa runs through mobile-first design, not desktop retrofits.

Treating mobile as a secondary breakpoint after a desktop design ships is backwards across most African markets, where mobile is the primary and often the only device a customer owns.

Design for the connection speed you actually have, not the one you wish you had

Median mobile connection speeds and data costs across much of the continent make a five-megabyte hero image and a JavaScript-heavy framework a direct barrier to entry, not a minor performance ding. Every additional second of load time on a 3G connection compounds into abandoned sessions in a way that is invisible on a fast office wifi during testing.

Build with an aggressive performance budget from the start, compress and lazy-load every image, and test on throttled connections that reflect the actual market rather than the developer's own broadband. A site that loads acceptably on 3G will load fast everywhere else, but the reverse is never true.

Design around data cost, not just data speed

In many African markets, mobile data is a meaningful household expense, and users are conscious of how much a page costs to load, not just how long it takes. A lightweight site that respects a visitor's data plan builds goodwill that a beautiful but heavy site actively destroys, regardless of how fast the connection happens to be that day.

Payment and messaging integrations need to match actual habits

Mobile money platforms are the primary payment method in many markets, ahead of cards, and a checkout flow built only around card payment quietly excludes a large share of potential customers. Similarly, WhatsApp and SMS often outperform email as the preferred contact channel, and building conversion paths around those channels rather than a traditional contact form matches how customers actually want to reach a business.

Progressive web app patterns solve real infrastructure gaps

Offline caching and installable web app patterns matter more here than in markets with consistently strong connectivity, because they let a customer browse a catalogue or complete a partially loaded form even through a connection drop, rather than losing progress and abandoning the session entirely.

Local hosting and CDN choices affect real users, not just benchmarks

Serving a site from a data centre on another continent adds latency that shows up as sluggishness for every visitor, all day, every day. Choosing a CDN with genuine edge presence across African regions, not just a marketing claim of global coverage, makes a measurable difference to real load times.
